January is one of the best months to visit the whole of Vietnam with pleasant, dry weather from north to south

North Vietnam

January is winter time in the north with generally dry and mild weather.

Hanoi: generally dry weather with mild, sunny days and sporadic rain. Being the month leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), January is the best time of year to visit, especially if you want to soak up the festive spirit. Streets burst with colour of kumquat trees and peach blossoms. Local markets and the Old Quarter become the liveliest with shoppers trying to get decorations for the biggest holiday of the year. It is great to be in Hanoi at this time of year!

Ha Long: dry weather though can be misty in early mornings. Weather tends to brighten up around noon time with occasional bursts of sunshine. Water can be too cold for swimming but temperature is pleasant enough for kayaking (suitable clothing is recommended)

Sapa: January is the coldest month in Sapa with the weather being misty and foggy.

Mai Chau: Very pleasant weather with an even mix of cloudy and sunny days. January is one of the best months to visit Mai Chau as it is the beginning of spring and you can start seeing peach blossoms everywhere. The air is pure and fresh, making it ideal for trekking or cycling trips.


Central Vietnam

Rainy weather draws to an end in central Vietnam in January. Weather tends to improve greatly during the second half of the month with more sunny days, clearer skies and pleasant temperature (18°C - 25°C )

Hue: dry, sunny and very pleasant weather during the second half of the month. A great time of the year to visit the royal tombs, mossy pagodas and monasteries that Hue is famous for!

Hoi An:  hot and sunny during second half of the month so similar weather pattern to Hue though temperature can be a bit higher in Hoi An (25°C - 29°C). January is a great month to visit the enchanting old town of Hoi An and soak up the Tet fragrance of incense and blossoms.

Nha Trang: hot, sunny weather throughout the whole of January makes Nha Trang an attractive option for a beach break in central Vietnam.

Da Lat: warm, pleasant weather during the day and chilly at night. Da Lat is particularly picturesque during January when the cherry blossoms is in full bloom.

South Vietnam

South Vietnam is at its best during January with blue skies, sunshine and comfortably hot weather, making it ideal for walking trips, city tours or cruise trips. The beaches in Phu Quoc are at their best with crystal clear water and you might not want to miss this glorious island in your itinerary!

Ho Chi Minh City:  Hot, sunny weather during the day. Cool nights and early mornings with low humidity. Perfect weather for walking trips.  Besides, it is definitely worth visiting Ho Chi Minh city on the weeks leading up to Tet as you can feel the joyous celebration & decoration everywhere.

Mekong Delta: hot, sunny weather! Without a doubt the weeks or days leading up to Tet is also a great time to visit Mekong Delta as the floating markets become liveliest with flowers, fruits, vegetables and Tet goods on display!

Phu Quoc: Hot, sunny with blue skies! The beach is calm and clear, ideal weather for a beach break!

Con Dao: Hot, sunny with blue skies although it is more windy and the sea can a bit more choppy than Phu Quoc’s.
