The most popular means of transport from Vietnam to Cambodia is via flight, either from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. The flights within Vietnam or to Cambodia are rather short, making it easy for you to comfortably explore both countries. You can also fly from Da Nang to Siem Reap. This allows you to explore the iconic attractions of both countries, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Angkor Wat) in just 9 days, as featured in our 'Compact Vietnam & Cambodia' tour.
For travelers interested in crossing over to Cambodia overland, you can do so via the Moc Bai or Ha Tien border. For the Moc Bai option, it's a relatively short drive. Our suggested itinerary, "Highlights of Vietnam & Cambodia - a 14-day overland adventure," is very popular with our clients who prefer coach transfers to flights.
If you'd like to make this even more exciting and don't mind a bit of a fantastic adventure, consider extending your stay to include a few days exploring the enchanting Mekong region, particularly Chau Doc. This town is ideal for experiencing the real Mekong Delta, with its hidden treasures: mysterious wetlands, bustling riverbanks, ethnic Cham villages, and atmospheric temples. For a sample itinerary, check out our Saigon to Cambodia overland trip, which can easily be tweaked to include Hanoi or Hoi An at the beginning of the trip, if you wish.
For lovers of cruises, we work with Jayavarman and Jahan cruises, the two most luxurious options that offer an 8-day, 7-night cruise trip from Saigon to Siem Reap or vice versa. Shorter trips of 3 nights between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh (or vice versa) are also available.
If you'd like to wrap up your Vietnam & Cambodia holiday at the beach, we recommend starting in Siem Reap, then Hanoi, and finishing up in the south on our paradise island of Phu Quoc. Our 'Best of Vietnam & Cambodia 21 days' tour is the trip for you if you'd like to have it all!
The absolute best time to visit Vietnam and Cambodia is from December to April when the weather is pleasantly mild with almost no rain in either country. If we’re being really picky, December to January can be a bit chilly in northern Vietnam, while April can be quite warm across both countries (though that’s not an issue if you don’t mind the heat). This makes February and March the sweet spot for travel. However, if you're considering traveling during these months, it’s advisable to book as soon as possible to avoid hotels and services being fully booked.
