If it is “the very lack of obvious drama or spectacle” that sets the beauty of places such as England apart, as Kazuo Ishiguro suggests in The Remains of the Day, then it is the abundance of those very qualities that makes Vietnam so unique. And by that, I do not mean its landscapes alone, but rather the spirit in which ordinary life unfolds.
Take breakfast, for example. In Vietnam, breakfast is a serious affair. Think a small crowd gathering around a big steaming pot or a padded xôi basket, eagerly waiting for their turn to be served. It is loud and chaotic, with motorbikes scurrying past, beeping relentlessly, people talking over each other, sellers shouting out orders, the chorus of cicadas competing with the neighbourhood loudspeaker, the unwavering hot sun (which no one seems to mind), and, most of all, the overly enthusiastic manner in which your question is met (especially if you are a foreigner in the queue). This is all part of what makes this land so unique. "Too much," it can seem at the time, but at the heart of it all is a very tangible culture, if you slow down and pay attention.

"The trip design by Trang took into account our preferences to be active with our days spent on everything from hiking up to mountain temples in Ninh Binh, bicycling around Cambodian temples, an overnight cruise on Halong Bay, and boating through the Mekong delta. Those arrangements were taken care of for us by Fine Asian Escapes. We also let Trang know we like to eat, and she arranged amazing street food tours, meals at wonderful restaurants, and we even had a morning spent at local markets followed by a cooking class. "It’s easy to rate a service or company when everything goes smoothly. It’s all about meeting your expectations or not. Well, it was not my case! Unfortunately, I had a bit of a mishap during my trip (my fault, of course!).
