Vietnam: May Weather

May is mixed in terms of weather.

May marks the start of rainy season in north and south Vietnam which usually happens at end of the month. You still can expect lots of sunshine and blue skies if you arrive during the first few weeks of this month however. Central Vietnam is still in dry season though it starts getting hotter and more humid.

If you’d like to have a taste of tropical weather, prefer fewer crowds, don’t mind some short downpours and want to take advantage of better prices then you should definitely consider to travel in May.

North Vietnam

May marks the beginning of wet season in the north with hot, dry weather and more rain towards the end of the month.

Hanoi: hot & humid weather with more chances of rain especially at the end of the month. However, the rain tends to last only a couple of hours. A good place to be is inside a traditional coffee shop where you can escape the heat whilst sipping some delicious ice coffee and watching the world go by.

Ha Long: sunny, hot and humid weather with more chances of rain at the end of the month but the cool sea breeze does help bring the temperature down

Sapa: Sunny and very pleasant weather despite some downpours at the end of the month. We think Sapa looks extremely lush and glorious after a heavy rain so yes the rain actually helps bring out the best version of this mountainous area. If you are worried your trekking trip might be affected don’t be! The rain is usually very short and you still have a lot of sunny, dry hours in the day.

Mai Chau: Though there are more chances of rain Mai Chau is still worth visiting this month as the weather is still very pleasant, making your trip more enjoyable!

Central Vietnam

Central Vietnam is well in dry season in May with temperature on the rise

Hue: dry, sunny & hot weather. To escape the heat plan your trip around early mornings/ late afternoons.

Hoi An: dry, sunny & hot weather. However, Hoi An beaches are at their best and you might want to head to the beach to cool off!

Nha Trang: hot, sunny weather throughout the whole of May makes Nha Trang an attractive option for a beach break in central Vietnam.

Da Lat: warm, pleasant weather though there are more chances of rain which come in short downpour.

South Vietnam

May is the start of wet season in the south and you can expect hot, humid weather with afternoon downpour that usually lasts an hour or so.

Ho Chi Minh City:  Hot, sunny weather during the day with frequent afternoon downpour. Nights and early mornings are cooler with lower humidity.

Mekong Delta: The wet season starts from May with hot, humid weather and frequent downpour which freshens the air and make your trip more bearable. If you are a fruit lover then May is one of the best months to visit the Mekong region. Delicious tropical fruits such as mango, durian, jack fruit and mangosteen are in season and a visit to a local orchard is a must!

Phu Quoc: Hot, sunny with blue skies in early May with more chances of rain towards the end of the month!

Con Dao: Hot, sunny with blue skies with calm sea. The waters around Con Dao are at their clearest during this time and suitable for diving. Rain is expected at the end of the month.
